To love as God loves?

We are a species, connected to other living things on this planet. We affect each other with every single choice we make and with every single choice, we are either promoting welfare on this planet or creating destruction. We are in charge of these choices. Granted, there are things in life where we have no choice and we have to reluctantly go through their repercussions, but we can always choose how to view these events and how we react to them. How do we make sense of an innocent creature dying at the hands of pollution? Dying at the hands of our own ignorance, belittling the splendour that we call the blue planet?  We cannot make sense of it, for making sense of it would be to make sense of God and God is unfathomable. We can only be conscious and aware of our every action. So how do we love as God loves?

A very special teacher of mine always says that he knows what Ram Dass would say about this disturbing picture. Can you love it? Loving a picture that so clearly illustrates how we as humanity bathe in ignorance and dry ourselves off with ego seems like an impossible thing to do. Loathing, despising, feeling acts of vengeance growing and even hopelessness seems to be the things that arise from witnessing the pictures of this short film. What happens on the adjacent sides of these emotions?

Respect for the person bringing our awareness to the situation. Gratitude for the sacrifices of these albatrosses who fades into eternity to show us how we affect their reality. Growing compassion for the earth and all of her wonderful creatures. By our perceived loss at the hands of death, we can open up the gateway to the realization of eternity. By realizing this eternity, we can embrace all that we seem to know about life and let that knowledge go. We can walk amongst this death and accept that our need to change it is as perfectly aligned with eternal balance as the need for wanting to prevent these bitter events from happening.

“FOR SOMETHING IN YOU DIES WHEN YOU BEAR THE UNBEARABLE, AND IT IS ONLY IN THAT DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL THAT YOU ARE PREPARED TO SEE AS GOD SEES, AND TO LOVE AS GOD LOVES”

~ Ram Dass
